What is an adjustment?

An adjustment is a maneuver performed on a joint of the body by the practitioners hand. Its purpose is to increase movement of the joint. In the process it usually decreases pain and lessens stiffness. The sound that patients hear that accompanies an adjustment is caused by a gas bubble which is released.

To date, there is a large body of research showing the benefits of chiropractic adjustments. Complications are quite rare. Side-effects such as tenderness are usually mild and only last a short time. Chiropractors have training which lets them determine if it is likely you will respond to adjustments, or if it is necessary to refer to another health professional.
